Myth and eroticism, in the shade of luxuriant vegetation
The Cryptoporticus overlooks a stretch of water which houses a Carrara marble Venus, inspired by the famous classic crouching Aphrodite. Sculpted by Tommaso Solari in 1762, it was placed there around 1840. Behind the statue, an opening offers the visitor a privileged view, allowing an intimate dialogue with the goddess. The waters surrounding it spring from the base of a monumental Yew tree and from some smaller waterfalls connected to the Shepherd’s Fountain. The cool and moist environment of the Bath of Venus hosts rare ferns and maidenhair ferns, as well as various species of fish and crayfish.
