The Margherita Fountain

The waterway opening, under the protection of the Muses

Before 1871 the Margherita Fountain was known by the name of Canestro: there was a basket of masonry flowers with intertwining motifs in the center of the rotunda. Today there are ten white marble statues, mostly made by Andrea Violani and Tommaso Solari, around the current basin and its flower beds. The sculptures represent Apollo with the Nine Muses, a tribute to the arts. In front of the fountain, at the central axis of the Royal Park, there is a dodecagonal Bellona stone block about one meter high, where a sundial is visible on the surface.
