Tempio italico

Una romantica evocazione dell’antico

Percorrendo il Giardino Inglese verso nord, nei pressi dell’Aperia, le presunte rovine del Tempio Italico ricordano l’entusiasmo settecentesco per la scoperta di Ercolano e Pompei. Costruiti tra il 1830 e il 1831, quando il Real Orto Botanico di Caserta era diretto da Geremia Ascione, questi finti resti archeologici si ispirano ai templi dorici di Paestum. In un’ambientazione di gusto romantico, le architetture ottocentesche affiancano due bassorilievi antichi. Il primo rappresenta un trofeo di armi, il secondo tre figure maschili togate: entrambi i pezzi vengono dall’Antica Capua.
